Go-To Green Sunshine Smoothie
It’s time to share my most favorite smoothie recipe while we savor as many warm & sunny moments as we can before hot drink & soup season hits us too hard. Hopefully next year more of the ingredients in our kitchen will come from our own garden, but in the meantime the Santa Fe farmer’s market has been the greatest game changer in our ability (and awareness) to eat as locally, seasonally, and with the cycles of nature as possible. Living out here in the wilderness has created a lot of space for me to explore, experiment, and experience different ways of fueling my body & energy, and I’ve been able to reflect on all the different dogmatic diets I’ve tested over the years from a more holistic and compassionate place. I don’t plan to ever share any one size fits all nutrition advice, but my continuously evolving philosophy on diet expands beyond food to everything that we are consuming in our day to day lives on all the mental, physical, energetic, electric, quantum planes, etc.
So here’s my advice & personal practice:
Slow down and be mindful of what you’re taking in and how it feels physically, energetically, and emotionally (food, nature, media, technology, relationships, light, everything)
Connect with your local community (especially the natural environment and plants), and allow yourself to shift with the inner & outer rhythms, seasons, and cycles
More real & less fake/toxic/over-processed/illegible ingredients physically & metaphysically
Allow yourself discipline driven by devotion rather than dogma or rigidity with space for simplicity, flexibility, and intuition to flow through
And now that I’m becoming the food blogger that tells you my whole life’s story before the details of the green smoothie you came here for… maybe I’ll figure out how to install one of those nice “jump to recipe” buttons. Anyways the banana, pineapple, matcha, spirulina combo is my go-to morning smoothie or smoothie bowl with lots of room for variation. Now that it’s a little chillier in the mornings in the mountains I’ve been drinking fresh ginger tea first thing after getting up then adding the slices of ginger to this smoothie later in the morning and 10/10 recommend. Sometimes I use a greens powder (Anima Mundi Herbals Liver Vitality Greens is my favorite) instead of spirulina or add extra greens or herbs like moringa, suma, pearl powder, a handful of fresh greens etc. for an added energy boost/skin support/detox/whatever I’m feeling that day. I also change up the milk/nuts/seeds/liquids all the time. If I use store bought plant-based milk I like to use Malk, Three Trees, or Elmhurst brands because they have nice clean ingredients without any weird shit. Otherwise I make my own or just add nuts/seeds (or nut/seed butter), water, and a tiny pinch of salt to the smoothie and let the Vitamix handle it, and I vary the amount of water or milk depending on how thick of a smoothie or smoothie bowl I’m going for. Recently I’ve been deep into tracking, balancing, and supporting my monthly cycle (I’ll write a whole big thing on that at some point but feel free to hmu if you want to chat about all the hormonal health & fertility things cause I’m fully nerding out on it over here) so I’ve been adding a little seed cycling experimentation into the smoothie recipes (flax + pumpkin for follicular phase and sesame/tahini + sunflower for luteal phase). I also like to add a little coconut butter (especially if it’s an extra active day and I want the extra calories) for the coconut, banana, pineapple, ginger combo of my tropical party, sun worshipping dreams.
My favorite morning sunshine party, energy boosting, skin glowing, digestion thriving smoothie:
1 banana
1/2 - 2/3 cup or 1/2 10oz bag frozen pineapple
A few slices of fresh ginger (I make tea with it first so it’s a little softer & more mellow)
1 tsp spirulina
1/2 - 1tsp matcha
1 1/2 cups plant based milk or 2 - 4 tbsp nuts/seeds/nut butter + water (less/more liquid for desired thickness)
Tiny pinch of salt
Optional:
1 tsp moringa
1 handful fresh greens like spinach or dandelion (bitter)
1 tbsp coconut butter
1/2 tsp your favorite adaptogens/herbs/mushrooms for energy/skin support/vitality/detox like:
suma/cordyceps - energy boost
pearl powder/tremella - glow from the inside out
Topping ideas if you’re going smoothie bowl style - bee pollen, shredded coconut, hemp hearts, crushed up nuts or nut butter (sprouted are my favorite for health & taste purposes), cacao nibs, banana/berries, local honey
* Blend and enjoy in the sun (wearing as little clothing as possible for an extra Vitamin D dose)
